1. Overview

Pinboard Plus is a third-party browser extension designed to enhance the functionality of the Pinboard bookmarking service. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect information when you use the extension.

We collect only the minimum data required to provide the extension's functionality and do not use data for advertising or unrelated purposes.

2. Data Flow Transparency

Pinboard Plus operates with two clearly separated data flows:

• Bookmarking Features (Core) — Data is sent directly from your browser to the Pinboard API to create, update, or retrieve bookmarks.
• Premium / Pro Features (Independent) — Premium features (such as AI summarization) are processed by the Pinboard Plus server and do not interact with the Pinboard API.

This separation ensures that only the necessary data is shared with each service.

3. What Data We Collect

We collect and process only the data necessary to provide the extension's features:

a. User-Provided Data

• Pinboard API token (entered by the user)
• User preferences and settings

b. Bookmark Data

When you save or update a bookmark:

• URL
• Page title
• Description or notes
• Tags

To show whether the page you are viewing is already bookmarked, the extension sends that page's URL to the Pinboard API when you are signed in. This lookup goes directly from your browser to Pinboard, using your own API token, and is not sent to us.

c. Optional Feature Data (Pro Features)

Only when you explicitly request an AI summary or Smart Tags:

• The page's text content, title, and URL
• For Smart Tags, the list of tags already in your Pinboard account (up to 100)

To check your Pro subscription, the extension sends your Pinboard username to our server.

d. Payment Information

For Pro subscriptions:

• Subscription status and billing metadata

(Payment processing is handled by Stripe. We do not store full payment details such as card numbers.)

e. Usage Analytics and Error Reports

• Anonymous usage events (for example, that the popup was opened or a bookmark was saved, with counts such as the number of tags) and which settings are enabled, linked to a random identifier generated by the extension. Never the pages you visit, your bookmarks, or your API token. You can turn this off in Options under "Enable usage analytics".
• Error reports when something fails, such as an error message and the extension version. Your Pinboard API token and the URLs sent to Pinboard are removed before a report is sent.

4. How We Use Your Data

We use your data strictly to provide the extension's functionality:

• To save and manage bookmarks via the Pinboard API
• To display bookmark status and metadata
• To provide optional AI-powered features (if enabled)
• To manage Pro subscription access
• To understand which features are used and to fix errors

We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or analytics unrelated to the product.

5. Data Sharing and Third Parties

We only share data when necessary to provide the service:

a. Pinboard API

Bookmark-related data is sent to Pinboard to perform bookmarking actions.

b. AI Processing (Pinboard Plus server, Cloudflare, OpenAI)

When you request an AI summary or Smart Tags, the data listed in section 3c is sent to the Pinboard Plus server, which runs on Cloudflare. It is passed to OpenAI, or to Cloudflare Workers AI as a fallback, solely to generate the summary or tags. Identical requests may be answered from a temporary cache.

If you enable the experimental "Summarize the page using the ChatGPT" option and enter your own OpenAI API key, the page URL is sent directly from your browser to OpenAI using that key.

c. Payment Processor (Stripe)

Subscription-related data is processed by Stripe for billing and payment management.

d. Analytics and Error Reporting (Google Analytics, Sentry)

The usage events described in section 3e are sent to Google Analytics, and error reports are sent to Sentry, solely to measure feature usage and fix problems in the extension.

We do not sell or share your data with third parties for marketing or advertising purposes.

6. Data Storage

• API tokens and settings are stored locally in your browser where possible.
• We do not maintain centralized storage of your browsing activity unless required for specific Pro features.
• All data transmission occurs over secure HTTPS connections.

7. Data Retention

• Local data remains in your browser until you remove the extension
• Any server-side data (if applicable) is retained only as long as necessary for functionality and billing

8. User Control

You have full control over your data:

• You can remove your API token at any time
• You can disable AI features
• You can turn off usage analytics in the extension's Options
• You can uninstall the extension to delete locally stored data

9. Security

We implement reasonable security measures, including:

• Secure data transmission (HTTPS)
• Minimal data collection
• Local storage where possible

10. No Sale or Advertising Use

We do not:

• Sell your data
• Use your data for targeted advertising
• Share your data with data brokers or advertisers

11. Human Access to Data

We do not access or review user data manually, except:

• With your explicit consent for support requests
• When required for security or legal compliance

12. Chrome Web Store Compliance

Pinboard Plus complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

• Data is used only to provide or improve the extension's core functionality
• Data is transferred only when necessary to provide the service
• Data is not used for advertising purposes
• Human access to data is restricted and controlled

13. Children's Privacy

This extension is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from children.

14. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Updates will be reflected by the "Last Updated" date.
